To reduce root disease risk, don't plant on soils that have recently grown tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or eggplant for at least two years. Fertile clays and loams produce the highest yields, but lighter soils that drain and warm quickly can produce earlier harvests. Tomato plants prefer well-drained, fertile soil, high in organic matter. Moderate watering slightly once seedlings break through the soil. Keep soil moist, but not soggy while awaiting germination. Warmer soils will promote faster germination. Seeds require warm soil between roughly 65-90 degrees F. For best results, sow seeds ½" deep in a well-drained, soilless starting mix. Indeterminate varieties are less commonly affected by Blossom End Rot than determinate varieties. Foliar feeding with seaweed or compost tea is a quick way to supply extra calcium. If your soil is acidic then lime it, as this will add calcium too. To reduce the incidence of Blossom End Rot, keep the soil evenly moist and well mulched. Most often it is due to irregular watering inhibiting calcium absorption, but it can also be caused by too much nitrogen or magnesium. Calcium is rarely deficient in the soil because it is commonly added to adjust pH, so there is usually some other factor at work. Blossom End Rot is a physiological problem rather than a disease and is caused by a lack of calcium in the plant.
